Why choose a dedicated indexable face milling system?
Face milling is one of the most popular machining applications which allow a large surface area to be machined in one pass with cutter diameters available up to Ø400mm. At Cutwel we have 45 degree and 36 degree face mills with 45 degree being the most popular of the two. 45 degree refers to the entry angle at which the insert makes contact with the component, this lead angle generates lower cutting forces, and minimises entry shock compared to that of a 90 degree system where you have no lead angle. Below are a few advantages and disadvantages of using a dedicated 45 degree or 36 degree face milling system over a 90 degree system.
Advantages- Low cutting forces due to entry angle
- Higher feed rates achievable
- Reduced vibration improving surface roughness
- Reduced corner chipping on exiting the workpiece
- Max cut depths reduced due to lead angle
- 90 degree shouldering not possible
- Larger diameters can cause clearance issues
How to choose the best face milling system for your machining requirements
Rich Mill RM8: Our number 1 best selling 45 degree milling system with 8 usable cutting edges, first choice for roughing and fine finishing applications. Negative insert geometry combined with high rake chip breakers provide added strength and improved swarf control when face milling a range of materials including steel, stainless steel, Inconel, Hastelloy, titanium, cast iron and aluminium. Diameters are available from Ø50mm – Ø400mm.
Rich Mill RM16: The most econimacal face milling system on offer with 16 usable cutting edges for medium to heavy applications, fine finishing can also be achieved with the use of a wiper insert. Diameters range from Ø63mm – Ø200mm with two available insert sizes ONMX06 & ONMX08 and maximum cut depths of up to 5mm.
FM10 PNMU 36°: Dedicated indexable system for high feed face milling, this new concept introduced by YG-1 combines feed rates similar to high feed milling & cut depths similar to standard 45° milling. The 36° approach angle improves stability allowing higher feed rates whilst maintaining low cutting loads. Available in a face mill holder only, ranging from 50mm–125mm with insert grades available for steel, stainless steel, HRSA’s & cast iron.
Aero Mill Plus+: High speed aluminium milling tool with PCD cutting edges dedicated for high performance face and shoulder milling applications. Adjustable insert cartridges and the lightweight aluminium body for precision machining and minimal tool run out.
