University of the Philippines has produced most of the country’s government officials (7 Presidents, 13 chief justices). The university is known for its Law and Governance programs which is why most of the Philippines’ Presidents, Senators, and Chief Justices graduated from here. Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas takes pride in its Arts, Engineering, and Medicine Courses. They even have their own hospital which serves as their students training ground wherein they can take in and treat real patients.
When it comes to the location, the University of the Philippines (in Manila) is just an LRT ride away. Meanwhile, the travel going to their campus in Diliman can be quite a hassle especially if you don’t own a car and live a bit far from the place. The University of Santo Tomas is easy to get to if you will go there via the LRT, the problem is, you still have to ride a jeepney going to the campus itself and this is where you will encounter the heavy traffic in Espaa. So if location is going to be our basis, it will depend on which university is more accessible to where you will be coming from. If you will be coming from a faraway place but want to study in either of these universities, there are many establishments near these universities which offers lodging.
With regards to the cost of education, food, and other utilities and amenities, studying at University of Santo Tomas is way expensive than studying in the University of the Philippines. They both offer quality education in their respective fields, the only difference is that University of Santo Tomas is a private school while University of the Philippines is a state university. So if you are looking into saving more, then you should opt for University of the Philippines but if money is not a problem, then you can always go for University of Santo Tomas.
In the end, it will all come down to your choice and your preference.
